HA2 – E-Sting MOTION GRAPHIC
|
The purpose of this
assignment is to:
Be able to originate and plan a
motion graphics sequence
Be able to produce a motion graphics
sequence
|
|
Scenario
Every
year E4 challenges their audience to do something rather special by making a
ten second, on-air sting for the channel.
To develop your online
showreel, you are going to conceive, design, produce and present a ten second
long sting. You don’t have a lot of time to play with and so try to make an
impact quickly.
The organisers of the
competition supply you with the E4 logo and a range of soundbeds to work from
and once finished, you will upload your completed sting to the E4 website for
judging.

Tasks in this
assignment may have additional guidance that you will need to follow posted
to Unit 64’s Moodle course and all evidence produced by you must be correctly
labelled and posted to your blog.
|
|
Task 1 – Research
Visit
the E4 and E4 Stings site. Produce mood boards that explore the existing
visual presence and character of the channel and the details of the competition.
In addition to your research into motion graphics, the work displayed of
former winners and finalists will give you an idea of the wide range of
approaches available to you. Use whichever software packages suit you best, BUT
cite any sources you
have used in your research, both written and visual.
Remember that you are trying to originate
and plan a motion graphics sequence showing creativity and flair and working
independently to professional expectations.
|
Unit 64 –
P2, M2, D2
|
HA2 Task 2 – Ideas
Generation
Taking
into consideration the research and the software experiments you have made,
generate a wide range of ideas for your sequence. Remember that this is about
generating many ideas quickly and not about producing great artwork. This can
be carried out using specific mind-mapping or design software, or by hand and
then scanned or photographed, BUT cite
any sources you have used in your ideas generation, both written and visual. You should
also start to consider the part that audio will play in the sequence. This
will require you to review the supplied media.
Remember that you are trying to originate
and plan a motion graphics sequence showing creativity and flair and working
independently to professional expectations.
|
Unit 64 –
P2, M2, D2
|
Task 3 – Planning
Choose your strongest idea
and develop it into a storyboard treatment(s). Again, work quickly and simply,
but make sure that you are clear and concise. Annotate and use symbols to
describe action. It is really important that you indicate the timing of each
section in both seconds and frames. Thinking the timing through carefully
will not only help you to keep within the timeframe given to you, but will
also help you to give your sting rhythm. If you need to adapt it or refine it,
then produce another. The test is whether you could give your storyboard to
someone else within a team to guide them in producing the sequence.
Once your storyboard
treatment is ready to be followed into production, complete the legal and
ethical checklist, taking care to check the specifications of the
competition.
The next job is to produce
an asset list from your storyboard treatment. This will provide you with a
shopping list of the elements required to produce your motion graphic, some
of which you will need to find and some of which you will need to create.
Complete a schedule for the
project. This will help you allocate enough time for each task and hit the
deadline. Your schedule will need to reviewed and updated at least once per
week.
Remember that you are trying to originate
and plan a motion graphics sequence showing creativity and flair and working
independently to professional expectations.
|
Unit 64 –
P2, M2, D2
|
Task 4 – Production
Carry out your plans and
produce your sequence using Adobe After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop,
Illustrator and any other appropriate software and techniques. Remember that
your final sequence will need to be 10 seconds long and outputted at 1280
x 720 pixels (square pixels) running at 30 (29.7) frames per second.
Continue to review your progress
as you work through your plans and make notes of changes and adaptations as
necessary in a production log. You can use this log to chart the techniques
and skills you use in the production of your ESting. This log, along
with your schedule will provide evidence of your project management skills.
Remember that you are
trying to produce a motion graphics sequence to near professional standards,
showing creativity and flair and working independently to professional
expectations.
|
Unit 64 –
P3, M3, D3
|
Task 5 - Review
Write
an evaluation of your project. Use your blog posts to identify the strengths
and weaknesses of your design process. This is best carried out by producing
a conclusion to your production log and schedule. Try to establish whether or
not your finished product has achieved the aim of the project. Take into
consideration anything said by interested parties.
Remember that you are
trying to explain how you have produced a motion graphics sequence to near
professional standards, showing creativity and flair and working
independently to professional expectations.

The purpose of this
assignment is to:
Understand current uses of motion graphics and
compositing video
|
|
Scenario
You have been commissioned
to write a blog article on the subject of motion graphics for Computer
Arts, the online and print magazine which covers all aspects of new
media design. Your article will serve as an introduction to the subject for
beginners to the subject.
The idea is for you to
provide an overview of how motion graphics are currently used across all
sections of the media and the technical considerations involved their
creation.

compositing video falls into one of six main types:
Interactive Menus
Animated Captions
Idents
Title and Credit Sequences
Stings
Web Banners/Attractors
Find at least one recent example of each type of
motion graphic and produce a profile which describes, explains and critically
analyses their use. You will need to embed your findings into your blog. (The
Web Banners/Attractors example may need to be a screen shot and link.)

HA1_Task 1
Glossary:
Pixel: pixel is a physical point in a raster image, or the smallest element in a display. This means its the smallest controllable element within a picture. These pixels contain color and they are square. These pixels all come together to create a picture. Each pixel is only one color and there are so many of them, thousands or millions that it creates a picture.
Resolution: Resolution refers to the clearness and sharpness of the image or video, this is often used to determinant a camera or screens worth.. The more pixels there are in an image, the more detail the image is, as long as its on a high pixel screen. but the same if it has low pixels.

Screen ratios: The rations within a screen basically mean the width and height proportion. This just gives us the size of the image and maybe the surface area.
Frame rate: Frame rate tells us the speed that the clip changes from one picture to another. This is because the brain can only visualize 10-12 frames per second, so if you put more in it gives it a sort of fluid/motion movement. thus making a moving picture. But the closer you are to the brains functional use of frames the jerkier motion the video is.
Video formats: The different formats in video means that you can record differently, changing the outcome of the video. Some of these are; Frame rate, Exposure, Pixel aspect ratio, frame size and scanning method. As you can see this only changes the [frame]'s This is because on a camera you cant change much else. That is why you need to transfer te files onto a computer for furter editing.
Video compression: Codec is short for coder-decoder and describes he method which the video data is encoded into a files and then decoded when the file is played back. Majority of videos are compressed during encoding and so the terms codec and compressor are often used. Transcoding is the term used for the process of converting from one codec to another. Codecs can be Lossless, which means they do not throw any data away, or Lossy, which means that some data is lost during encoding. Lossless codecs are of higher quality than lossy codecs, however they produce larger files.
